Last night we got to participate in a wonderful community dinner at the GHI office. We all stopped working a little early and started preparing a big meal for GHI staff and friends: artisan pizzas! We made dough, tomato sauce, fresh salsa and guacamole, and lots of delicious toppings – all picked freshly from the farm and prepared in the outdoor kitchen. It was so nice to hang out, dance, cook, and chat with the staff and neighbors. There’s a group of volunteers/donors from Chicago who are also here right now, so we got to talk with them about the Center for Street Children that they’ve been working with in Kigali. The community here is incredible. Everyone is passionate and interesting and warm. The work that GHI does is inspiring and thoughtful and, most importantly, designed by the community for the community. I’m just in awe at how tight the staff is. We already feel so welcome and comfortable, and just want to soak up as much as possible over the next 4 weeks.
